Why do we need policies? David McQueen 10/01/2007 17:06
I have studied a number of company policies, spoken to a number of HR personnel and researched a number of papers both here and abroad on diversity policies. I still am none the wiser as to why we really have these.

Yes I have heard the various business cases and legal cases for having such policies, but shouldnt the money be best spent on internal company communication? What real measurable benefit is there to having a diversity policy? Is it to win awards? Meet quotas?

Just curious.

Hi - I think what I would say is why do we need any policies and how are they being developed?  They should in an ideal world shape behaviours in the workplace and they should be evaluted to ensure that they are working, otherwise there's no point in having them at all.  I will be cynical and say that much of diversity is lip service anyway and not many people really know or understand how to implement diversity initiatives anyway!

Policies are developed for number of reseasons. It could be to protect image, reputation, standing and brand in a changing global economy or it could be that some companies have developed 'paper policies' because they make them look good.

Policies therefore do mean anything until they are implemented and this where you can tell the difference between the good, the bad, and the ugly. The equality and diversity policies, like any other polcies, are there only to guide how an orgnisation does its business. The proof of the pudding is reflected in organisations strategic objectives, structures and systems in place, HR strategy and in its products and services etc. I am sure you know what I mean. However if you need further information or assistance please contact via email or alternatively ring me 07951984571.

Hope above comments have been helpful.

Majeed
