Hello,

Does anyone know of any recognised and viable alternatives to the CIPD qualifications?

I ask this as I live in a country where there are no study centres for any CIPD course, and I believe distance learning is not practiced by the organisation (ironic being they are a training and development organisation, I know, but if anyone knows any different I would be very grateful!).

Thanks

Other organisations that provide distance learning options are www.bpp.com and www.icslearn.co.uk.  You can find more information about flexible learning options on the CIPD website but these are the main ones I believe.

It sounds like you are not in the UK. An alternative is the US version  the SHRM  run a remote course  for PHR and SPHR . It not well known in the UK but is to the US and US employers

Thanks all for your advice.

Yes that's correct, I currently do not live in the UK, and thanks for the information.   It seems that the CIPD, bpp and ICS (thanks Donna) all require some mandatory  residential / face-to-face components which are not practical in my situation so........

I have decided to undertake a distance learning MSc. in International HR and see what APL I can claim in the future should I wish to seek CIPD status.

Thanks all

Out of interest which establishment are you studying your MSc HRM through?

It is through Leicester University CLMS and begins this month.  I have to say the support so far has been excellent from them.

I've has similar trouble finding a distance learning course which requires no attendance. I'm in the UK but live on an Island. I found Robert Gordon Uni in Aberdeen offer an online MSc course. It is crazy that the CIPD can't offer something similar.

I couldn't agree more. The Institute is caught in an oxymoron where it is supposed to be dedicated to professional development yet draws the line at development when personal circumstances do not allow the student to attend an occasional workshop. Quite a drawback in an ever-evolving globalised environment and a major consideration for potential membership.

Anyway, I would join the Institute if it offered such flexibility but for the time being, I'm content enough with my chosen course, and good luck to you Sarah!

The Open University www.open.ac.uk offers a distance learning MSc course.  Solent University in Southampton also offers an evening CIPD course for both the PGCert and PGDip qualifications, while Surrey University does a Saturday course.

Unfortunately I too have found nowhere near me that's approved by the CIPD and runs a course I can combine with full time employment.

I still have lots of questions about CIPD qualification and am not even sure whether an MSc through the OU would lead to me being CIPD qualified?
