How can we apply stress management to everyday workers? Stressed workers are less productive, more prone to accidents, have more sick days, and cost the company many thousands of dollars on the bottom line. What should be a good stress management program were employees feel good about coming to work and doing the best job they can.

My best advice is to ask the employees what they want!
The HSE promotes a consultation policy for best practice in stress management - see www.hse.gov.uk/stress - and advise all employers to consult with their employees on stress related issues once every 18 to 24 months. This consultation process normally follows their best practice guidelines but can also include a request for suggestions from the employees - see the free questionnaire downloadable from www.stressbiz.co.uk.
When employee's suggestions are acted upon they have a vested interest in ensuring it succeeds. Managagement imposed initiatives often fail where employees believe there is a hidden agenda.
You could also allow employees to choose how they manage their stress. In my area (Gloucestershire) the Isbourne Holistic Training Centre is developing a voucher system that allows individual employees to choose from a range of stress reducing activities - they have about 100 registered independent tutors offering a broard range of activities and events. Employers will be able to purchase vouchers and hand these to staff without being too prescriptive on how the employee uses them.

Hope this has helped.

Humphrey
