Hello I have been asked to undertake some HR-based work on a freelance basis which I am planning to accept. I work in a salaried role, but part-time so I have free time to undertake the work. I have 10 years HR expereince. I am unsure what to charge though - if an hourly rate, how much? If an amount for the piece of work, I guess I need to wait to see exactly what is required? I am excited about the opportunity and where it may take me but need some advice if anyone can help. I want to ensure I portray a professional image when I take this further. Many thanks in advance |

You could research some job boards to see what rates are on offer, this can give you some ball park figures. Or you could call some agencies and ask them what they think you could earn on the market with your experience, although i would take this with a pinch of salt it can be helpful for an idea of current market rates. In my experience a daily rate is usually how consultants are paid. regards |

Hi You need to be competitive and yet not underprice. This is because one day your situation may change and you are then asked to do more work for this client - but you will not command a livable fee. Generally speaking for expert services you should be charging £50-100 per hour or 400-800 per day. Remember that working as a freelance means that you will need to declare your additional earnings to the inland revenue (this means completing a tax return every year), You will need liability insurance - if something goes wrong you do not want to lose your house Happy to share my experiences about consulting Mike |
