Half day closing Brian Warren 31/08/2007 13:08

Our employees recently said in our annual survey that they would like to work longer Monday to Thursday and have a half day on Friday. I'm trying to put together a proposal for a pilot project and wondered if anyone has any advice about this? One issue will be holidays, because we don't want people taking every Friday off and "doubling" their annual leave entitlement.

Brian- my general advice is dont'

My specific advice depends on what service/products you provide as half day Fridays can be very damaging.

The advice on Fridays is that they either count as a full day or they cannot take Fridays off other than as a full week or convert your hols to hours

Brian

I have worked in many different industry sectors and have found that introducing flexible working is a good way to work.  Most of the companies have a 41/2 day working weeok allowing longer hours Monday to Thrusday and shorter hours for Friday.  Where flexible working is concerned there was limits on how many hours staff can accrue during one pay period, we always limited if to 16 hours debit, but allowed up to 11 hours credit allowing people who have personal issues to arrange to come into work later to enable them to sort out say child minding issues this helped reduce sickness absence.  You would have to enssure that there was a policy inplace to lay out core hours that every member of staff would be required to atend work.  An example of this is 9.30am to 12.30pm and 2.30pm to 16.00pm.  If you want more help with this please feel free to contact me.  You will require your managrs to buy into this as they would be expected to manage this arrangement.  I have also found that this results in improved productivity and morale.

Hi Brian, we introduced 'Compressed Working' a few years ago which allows employees to work additional hours within an agreed pattern to allow either a full or half day off within that pattern.  The scheme has been very well received and is seen by the employees as a huge benefit, I would be happy to email you the guidelines of our scheme so you can see how we have dealt with it.

I would also like a copy of your scheme if you wouldn't mind.  We are currently looking at flexible working for all staff and compressed hours would be one of those considerations.

Many thanks.

I implemented compressed working in defence manufacturing. It was popular with the Unions and most employees enjoyed starting their weekend on Friday lunchtime. It was useful for encouraging overtime working as employees were often willing to work extra hours on the Friday afternoon rather than travelling back into work on the weekend. Ensure that you build in a review so that you can pull back from it at a later date if its not working for you. You may want to consider whether this will work if you are in an organisation whose customer's may require  contact during that half day and organising cover accordingly

We operate a 4 1/2 days working week whereby the normal office hours run from 8.00am- 4.45pm Mon-Thur and 8.00am - 12noon Friday with a half hour lunch break. We also have a policy in place where employees can take a maximum of 4 Fridays per year. This system seems to have worked very well for a number of years.

I'm currently working at a place where the weekly hours are 37 per week. Core hours are 9.45am to 3.45pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 12.30pm on Fridays, providing these hours are covered, you can make up the remainder of the hours within a 7am to 7pm timeframe, enabling you to leave at 12.30pm on a Friday. It seems to work well here but again it would be dependent on your business needs.
++++++ Re: Half day closing Brian Warren 06/02/2008 13:44
Thanks for your comments and advice. We ran a 3-motnh pilot scheme and, having had no problems or issues, this is now permanent. Employees have the option of working the standard days or the new working pattern, with longer working days Monday to Thursday and finishin gat 12.30pm on Fridays. For all absences (sickness, holiday etc) Friday counts as an equal day to any other day of the week and this was agreed during the consultation period by employees and before the scheme became permanent.

We work 4.5 days per week but we convert all our annual leave into hours. It is then managed by the Manager and if we feel that too many fridays are being taken as annual leave we just remind people- we have operated like this for the last 5 years or so and only once have we reminded someone. The other way is to limit it to say no more than 6 per year?- our previious scheme said this and that worked well also
