Building an HR department from the scratch Toma 08/01/2008 13:02 toma pagojute@ yahoo com

Hi,

I work for a small IT company with only 35
employees. I started as an Office Administrator and now I am also responsible
for HR. The problem is this company has never had an HR department before and
all it has is a employment contract and couple policies on health and safety
and diversity. So basically I have to build an HR department from scratch.

Could you please advise me what my first
steps should be? And what in your opinion is the most important function of HR?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Toma

Hi,

I have just started work in a new HR department. For my CIPD I want to do a report on starting HR from scratch and managing the change. I cannot seem to find hardly any articles or case studies on this. Please could  you tell me how you introduced HR so that I could use it in my report?

I would really appreciate any help you could give.

Many Thanks

Dear SJ,

I am an Occupational Psychologist who have been assigned a similar task - to build a HR department from scratch. If you could send me the materials on pytlis@email.cz I would very much appreciate  it. Although it is an UK company that operates abroad (so some of the points may be different), most of it should be the same.

Thank you very much,

John Bachelor

If it's not too much trouble, could I also get a copy of your start-up info.  I would sincerely appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

Hi SJ, I'm writing an essay on 'why we need an HR department in businesses' and feel your starter pack may come in useful. Would you be kind enough to forward me on a copy and if you have any views on the above question I would very much like to hear from yourself or anyone at all, as this is not my line of work.

Many thanks. sha_faulkner@yahoo.co.uk

Many thanks SJ. As I mentioned the company I'm about to join is small under 40 employees.  I know that they have created some staff files but that's about all.  Although I've been iun HR for a number of years, the Depts. have always been formed prior to me joining, so really it's what to do first, staff handbook, contracts etc. and where's the best place to source any info. Also any employment law companies that I may subscribe to for the future.

Many Thanks, look forward to hearing from you,

Beverley.

Hi All,

I have recently joined due to finding myseld in a dilemma! My name is Andrea, I joined an IT company 3 months ago, including myself there are three employees. My role here is varied including Admin, Accounts, Sales, and the thing im finding most confusing is HR. I have no experience in HR, and when I came to the company there was no existance of HR.

I have covered quite a few things all done from scratch such as the Employee Handbook, Employee Contract, Health & Safety Booklet, Basic Personal Employee file, Different policies from Anti-bullying to Disciplinary Procedure.

I am confused still as to the duties of HR on a day-to-day basis, with the company being so small there is only one member of staff to monitor. Also as it is quite a relaxed environment so it isn't easy to apply an Anti-Bullying policy when the Director jokingly winds up myself and the other member of staff or bring in an email and internet policy when this is used freely by the other member of staff.

Please Help!

Andrea
