Getting into HR after studies Ann 28/05/2008 18:25
I graduated with a MSc in HRM last year and am also a Graduate member of CIPD, however I am struggling to find a job in HR having been looking for just under a year now... I keep getting told I do not have enough experience in the HR field or that I am overqualified for general administration roles due to my studies! I also get told that I do not have enough administration experience so I am feeling like I am in a catch22 situation, has anyone been in a similar situation and how did u overcome it?

I have joined many local agencies to no avail having only been offered two administration jobs in 6 months (due to me being overqualified in the eyes of the employers), I have also joined tried joining agencies in Birmingham and London but with no responses as I am not in the area even though I am explicit in letting them know I am willing to relocate! Please advise as to what I should do as the next step as I am truely passionate about HR and am feeling despondent about the situation.

Thanks,
Ann

Hi Ann

I think getting into HR is the hardest step.  I would try temping and that way even if the temporary role isn't within a HR department you would then be able to show willing by dropping by at the HR department of the company you are temping for, leaving your CV and offering to assist them if they have a need with anything.

You could also upload your CV on to job boards such as totaljobs or monster as recruiters / agencies will search these daily and contact you if they have something suitable.

Best of luck,

Becky

First & foremost don't let it get to you.

I finished my MSc last September in International Business & Management - & realised my heart was in HR - I was told exactly what you have been told but i perservered and am now working in an exclusive hospitality doing primarily HR admin but also exit & probationary interviews. I even run my own HR helpdesk on wednesdays & fridays.  & Hopefully in September i will be start studying for my CIPD accrediations!

i've only been working here since March, but before i worked as a Personal Assistant to a HR director in the NHS - i found that this helped me loads as I was able to dabble in all aspects of HR from recruitment to payroll.

if you have any questions feel free to contact me :)

good luck!

Nat
