An employee has offered a very simple letter of resignation. She is a very difficult person and her colleagues find her very hard to work with and get on with. Despite this she is a very hard worker and apart from taking a lot of sick leave, I have never had a problem with her performance - just her attitude! So...I want to accept her letter on face value, although I know that it is really a cry for help, and she really wants to be able to sit down and discuss the situation. My question is .... can I just act on the letter without any form of consultation? and if I do and she then withdraws the resignation, where do I stand?
