Although the H1N1 "swine flu" virus has been classified as in the post-pandemic period by the World Health Organisation, it is likely to take on the behaviour of a seasonal flu virus and continue to circulate for some years to come.

In January 2011, after the announcement by the World Health Organisation, another outbreak of swine flu hit the UK. Statistics from FirstCare, which monitors absence rates for the public and private sector, found that 275,000 workers were off sick with flu symptoms following the New Year bank holiday in 2011.
