Bubble bursts as soapworkers call strike

Workers
at Soapworks in Glasgow,
a subsidiary of the Body Shop, are to strike.

Following
a vote by Transport and General Workers’ Union
(T&G) members to take industrial action, the workers will down tools 30
August.

Almost
90 per cent of the workforce voted to take strike action after the company
refused to offer any increases to shift allowance pay, even though the company
offered a 3 per cent increase to basic pay.

Soapworks employs around 60
people at Easterhouse in Glasgow,
supplying oils and soap products to the Body Shop and Superdrug.

Tam
Connarty, T&G regional
industrial organiser, said because the company is
owned by the Body Shop the T&G will consider making a direct approach to
Body Shop founder Anita Roddick.
