Community workers union to merge with T&G

Members of the Community and Youth Workers Union have voted to merge with the Transport and General Workers’ Union (T&G).

The Community and Youth Workers Union represents community, youth and play workers, personal advisors and mentors. The merger will formally take place in November 2006.

Paul Boskett, the union’s president, said: “CYWU has a proud history and identity which will be enhanced as we grow and organise in the T&G to recruit every play, youth and community worker in Britain and Ireland.”

Tony Woodley, T&G general secretary, said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to build union organisation in the community and youth sector and will boost our 25,000 membership in the voluntary sector.

“We’re committed to maintaining the professional identity of the Community and Youth Workers Union, and we see this is a step forward in our vision of a growing union.”
