Electronics retailer Currys has revealed that its distribution centres are performing at peak levels despite a major change programme that will see 1,400 job losses by this time next year.
Claire Walton, Currys’ HR director, attributed this success to the company offering personal and professional development courses to help staff find work.
DSG International (DSGi), Currys’ owner, announced the two-year change programme in April 2005. Concerned the news would lead staff to resign sooner rather than later – bringing stores to a standstill – Walton offered them an incentive to stay.
In one option, informal 90-minute self-development ‘workouts’, 93% of the participants said they would apply what they had learned.
