Firefighter strike to go ahead despite possibility of war

The
Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called another 24-hour strike – despite possible
military action against Iraq.

The
union ordered the walkout for 20 March after rejecting a 16 per cent pay
increase described as a "final offer" by local employers.

FBU
general secretary Andy Gilchrist said the strike was "inevitable",
because the latest pay offer was worse than the one made last November.

"Even
at this late stage, it is extremely disappointing that the employers have
failed to meet our concerns about the worth of firefighters," he said.
