Investigations: HSE opts for guidance, not legislation

The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to provide advice to help employers
investigate workplace incidents that lead to injuries or ill-health.

The
organisation has decided to issue guidance rather than legislation following a
period of consultation with almost 700 employers.

Research
by the HSE revealed a widespread lack of confidence in carrying out
investigations and many employers said guidelines to close this knowledge gap
would  be more helpful than legislation.

In
2001-2002, 249 people died and 27,477 suffered major injuries while at work.
This led to 40.2 million sick days being taken in the UK.
