Mobile working gets thumbs-down from most UK employers

Less than half of UK organisations encourage mobile working, according to research, and the public sector is one of the worst offenders.

The survey, conducted by You Gov and commissioned by telecoms firm T-Mobile, questioned more than 5,000 employees from a range of different industries. The IT sector was found to be the most flexible with 70% of technology organisations actively supporting mobile working. The financial and media sector also came out well.

“Mobile working presents a real opportunity for businesses to enable their employees to work how they want, when they want and where they want, whilst benefiting from increased efficiency and a more agile workforce,” said Phil Chapman, marketing director at T-Mobile UK.

Seven out of 10 employees said they liked to take advantage of the ability to work while commuting with 42% claiming they spent too many hours in the office each week.

However, some employees perceive mobile working to be an additional burden and prefer not to take their home with them.
