Research reveals no-one is immune to poverty

A
successful career is no guarantee against poverty, according a survey by the Elizabeth
Finn Trust.

The
research found that ill health, redundancy, family breakdown and poor pension
provision are among the factors that have pushed almost 4 million adults below
the poverty line despite solid career backgrounds.

Respondents
felt that uncertainty over pensions is likely to become a major factor in the
growth of this group over the next 15 years, the poll of 10,000 people found.

Jonathan
Welfare, chief executive of the Elizabeth Finn Trust, said: "We tend to
assume that people such as managers, accountants, teachers and nurses should be
able to look after themselves – this new research dispels this myth.”
