Six unions warn against closing UK naval bases

NAVAL GAZING: A coalition of trade unions has warned the government against making cuts to the UK’s naval bases.

Six major unions, representing thousands of Ministry of Defence (MoD) employees, are calling for the nation’s three existing naval bases to be protected. The unions are being consulted as part of the MoD’s Naval Base Review.

Ian Waddell, Amicus national officer, said: “Closure of any of the bases would mean disaster for the local economies, which rely on the presence of the Navy and the thousands of service families.” The MoD said the review would not conclude until the spring.
