South West Trains’ staff call off strikes

South West Trains’ staff
called off today’s and next Tuesday’s strike.

The RMT union called off their
strike over working patterns and terms and conditions after discussions
yesterday.

The company are allowing
employees to take off waistcoats if the air conditioning on trains breaks down.
Employees are also allowed to wear incorrect name badges as long as the member
of staff’s name is clear.

SWT staff wanted to be able to
work a 14-day cycle. SWT’s only wanted them to work a 13-day pattern, but now
it will allow the extra day as long as one day is taken off in that period as
annual leave.

"Our decision to call of
the strike gives the lie to the continued assertions by SWT’s management that
this was politically motivated. But the serious issues involved in this
dispute, which was about a lot more than waistcoats, has taken delicate
negotiations to resolve," said RMT’s assistant general secretary Vernon
Hince.
