Training for excellence

The City of York will become a centre of excellence for training and
education in the rail industry when the new Yorkshire Rail Academy (YRA) opens
in September this year.

Developed jointly by York College and the National Railway Museum, and funded
with £1.25m by Yorkshire Forward and the Learning and Skills Council, the YRA
will become a prime education and training centre for the industry .

It will be housed in a building adjacent to York’s National Railway
Museum, and will be the first of its kind in the country. Incorporated in the
YRA will be York College’s Centre of Vocational Excellence for railway and
signalling engineering.

The new academy will provide training for rail employees and modern
apprentices.

The academy’s intention is to become a centre of excellence for all aspects
of rail education, training and research and will engage with all partners in
the rail industry, and particularly employers.
