Retail union Usdaw has asked to see Index’s accounts to see if Littlewoods’ decision to close the catalogue chain was justified.
Some 3,200 Index jobs are under threat after it was announced on Monday that 133 stores across the UK were closing.
Usdaw national officer, John Gorle, said: “This was a major decision to shut the doors which has a devastating impact on hundreds of our members.
“We want our independent auditors to look at the figures and establish there were no other options available to Littlewoods.”
However, the union has welcomed a commitment from retail giant Littlewoods to redeploy Index staff after the announcement the catalogue chain was to close.
Usdaw said that after negotiations Littlewoods agreed it would redeploy as many staff as possible to its home shopping business and high-street stores.
