World Cup should be viewed as opportunity, not a threat

So World Cup fever could cost employers £4bn through internet abuse? (PersonnelToday.com, 5 June).

Oh what a lovely job, sitting there banging a calculator and creating irrelevant statistics – this is in the same league as the university professor who has calculated that a car will suffer detrimental fuel consumption and carbon emissions will go up because of people flying little England flags from their cars.

Good employers will look on the positive side with regard to the tournament. If a business is having a problem with misuse of IT then it should tackle it as a specific issue, and not just because of an event that happens once every four years.

The World Cup is an opportunity for employers to build some good employee relations, and not a time for applying a ‘scrooge’ mentality during the summer.
