&lt;p&gt;I read this and agree with pretty much everything said, but feel there is something missing. Why do any of this at all? I guess the answer always bubbles up to &amp;#39;to enhance the performance of the company&amp;#39; - or words to that effect. Cut it any which way you like, that&amp;#39;s the high level motivator for any company. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You note in your post some of the other reasons, the &amp;#39;how&amp;#39; and the pitfalls of running the process. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I formed a company called Cogendo which created a product called PerformanceHub to try and address all these points. The company was born out of frustration more than anything else - we knew performance management was key to success, but it was all too often seen as a bind. PerformanceHub tries to address this by putting the system online, keeping objectives current, reducing admin and increasing focus.&lt;/p&gt;
