I am wondering how best to respond to a candidate that has politely asked for feedback after receiving a regret letter from us, having been unsuccessful for a position with us. This candidate has gone through several rounds of interviews and we would like to be helpful in providing feedback and maintaining our reputation within the new grad community at various universities. At the same time we do not want to get into an argument as to why the candidate was not selected or do not want to expose ourselves to legal repercussions. This is likely not a one-time occurrence as we are looking to regularly recruit new graduates throughout the year for internship-type position and would like to have a consistent policy for responding to feedback requests.
How do other organizations deal with this and is there anything we should particularly watch out for if we did decide to provide feedback tailored to this particular candidate?

Hi Liuba,

The feedback you give should be tailored to the individual to help them develop their interview skills.  Focus on facts, be positive regarding their application, give them examples of how they could have structured their answers, how did they come across in terms of their preparation.  Let them know the figures, i.e. how many applied, how many selected for interview, basically tell them that there was a lot of competition.  Hope this helps.
