Hi all

I am a recruitment consultant with aroun 2 years experience in the IT sector. witht he current tough markets and alot of recruitment freeze, i now forsee this as a good oppertunity to move out of Recruitment and directrly in the market. Personally i think my skills and personallity would suit the project management world well. Can anybody give me any advice of the best way to move into this world?

Hello

If you really want to go into PM work you should undertake a course in Agile or Prince 2 to get a decent certification.  A Business Analyst qualification is not a bad idea as well.  It's a good investment in yourself and adds to your market value.

You need to decide what field of PM you will work in i.e. what systems, business area etc.  Play to your strengths and experience. I do HR because I am a qualified HR Manager and have a strong systems installation and development background - you may have a specific field in which you can operate.  Look for junior/assistant PM roles initially because that will give you experience at a level where you can see how a project is initiated, managed and delivered and a chance to learn from assisting and watching others. Nobody is likely to give you a PM role unless you have already done one anyway so you will have to start at the base and work up.

PM work carries huge responsibility and you have to be pretty knowledgeable about people and businesses to do it well. So - if you fancy 4.00 am cold sweats because you have woken up realising something awful could be just about to occur,  long hours, people resenting the chnages you bring, awkward suppliers etc then go for it.  It's huge fun and very rewarding. Personally I love it.
