Quitting smoking is hard but the methods currently available through the NHS are questionable to say the least. The NHS push drugs like Champix and Zyban which are known to have considerable negative side effects [and put companies at risk for promoting them], and the other only alternative currently available is Nicotine Replacement Therapy [NRT] i.e Nictotine patches, gum, inhalers, etc. Both methods have a very poor success rate for quitters.
A recent Harvard University study revealed that they have a less than 8% as compared with 20-30% for methods such as cold turkey, the mygismo method and hypnotherapy which are much healthier and have a higher success rate.
I urge any company embarking on a smoking cessation drive to investigate alternatives to those peddled by the NHS as these are already available to the general public. They show that they are concerned with the health of the employee not only to quit but the method they choose to quit by.
I disagree with you Elliot. I think that NRT is a great way to quit smoking - I was a heavy smoker two years ago but am now smoke free thanks to Electronic Cigarettes. I must say if a smoker feels they can go cold turkey then I would strongly urge them to do so as it is the healthiest and in my opinion best method. However I tried twice and fell back into the trap - I like to think I have quite strong will power but when it came to smoking I just couldn't give it up without help. The people that know me know that I never jump into anything without first doing a bit of research and finding out about everything available to me. After spending a week or two researching I decided that it was between an Electronic Cigarette or the Alan Carr book. I found some very informative articles at Simply E Liquid and decided to go with the Electronic Cigarette - to cut a long story short it worked for me and helped me to once again live a healthy lifestyle.
