in my opinion it is very worthwhile intergating HR and payroll through the use of IT. As you quite rightly say, your organisation has done this and so has mine, Cascade HR and Payroll.
I think the key requirement is that you choose a single supplier who is capable of supplying you with both the HR system and the Payroll system. This avoids all those horrible issues of dealing with 2 suppliers and the inevitable integration issues.
Care must be taken to choose a HR and Payroll system that is segregated so that the HR and self service functions can operate independently of the payroll function, yet integrating in an automated and, importantly, audited way. Payroll must be able to audit and report on the data coming from HR prior to accepting it into the payrol system. Once data is integrated over, it must again be fuly auditable, for obvious reasons.
On a final note, if you are looking to procure a new HR system, it makes absolute good sense to choose a supplier who also provides their own payroll system (avoid the ones who cleverly re-badge other vendors payroll products). Why? Well sonner or later, your payroll colleagues will be looking for a new system, and you don't want to be forced into looking to change your new HR system just to get somethign that satisfies the payroll people. So choose a HR supplier who you can recommend to your payroll colleages in the future. This puts you in the commanding position.
