Hi all, I am looking for some help on the above subject.

I have been working for my company for just over 5.5 years and I am in a position of middle management for the last 3. Three years ago I got a promotion which involved me moving to a workplace 45 miles from my home taking just over 1 hour to drive each way (at my own expense). It was verbally agreed that I would do this role for my career development with my regional manager saying that he would in a couple of years move me back to a place closer to home. I have been asking for such a position for over a year now but have never been offered or allowed a transfer in this time despite my finding that there has been 4 opportunities.

I have now had a conversation with my regional manager asking that he find me a position closer to my home as I have an eye condition which is worsening (which may affect my driving) and also that I am now pregnant. He stated that there is nothing he can do for me and that he can't help where my home is.

I don't think there is anything in my contract about travelling distances so I am not sure where I stand on this matter.

Thanks, any help appreciated.

I think that as you moved to the new position over 3 years ago there is not much you can do about it now.

If you have an eye condition which prohibits long periods of driving then I would suggest maybe getting a letter from your doctor and then asking to either work from home a few days per week or ask for your working location to be moved.

Again same principle could apply as you are pregnant but I get the impression that they are not forthcoming in making adjustments - if there is an opportunity to work from home then I would go for that - put a business case together on what part of your role you could do from home - for how long and what impac there would be on the business and your team (if any).
