Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a banner ad and a button ad?
We use these terms to distinguish between ads of different sizes.

  • a button ad is small 120x60 pixels and will usually be one several of this size on the page - for example on our jobs pages
  • a banner ad is larger - 468x60 pixels appears at the top of the page.
  • a skyscraper ad is 120x600 pixels and appears down the right hand side of the page

Where will my ad appear?
You can choose to have your ad appear on just about any specific page ("guaranteed position") if you wish, including the home page. Such bookings are subject to availability. Alternatively, you can book a "run-of-site" ad which means that your ad will be delivered wherever a free slot appears. Run-of-site bookings are cheaper than guaranteed position bookings.

How long will my ad run for?
Online ads are not sold by time, but by number of impressions. An impression occurs any time that a user calls up a page which contains your ad.

For run-of-site ads, The usual way of running a campaign is to
  1. specify a start-date
  2. specify an end-date
  3. specify the number of impressions

The ad-serving software will deliver the impressions evenly over the duration of the campaign

For ads in specific positions we can advise you of the number of impressions you will need to buy for your ad to appear more-or-less consistently in that slot.

How is the fee calculated?
Online ads are charged on a cost-per-thousand impressions basis. Confusingly, the abbreviation for this is "CPM" (cost per mille - "mille" is French for "thousand") The minimum number of impressions you can buy is 50,000.

If I book a specific position, will my ad be the only ad to appear in that slot?
That will depend on whether other ads are also booked into that slot and how fast your ads need to be delivered for them to last for the length of campaign you have specified. If this happens - don't panic. We will deliver the number of ad impressions you have purchased.

What formats do you accept?
We accept gif ads and most rich media formats.

What size are the ads?

  • Button ads: 120x60 pixels.
  • Banner ads: 468x60 pixels
  • Skyscraper ads: 120x600 pixels

I use an agency. They say they want to supply "tags" rather than creatives. Is that OK?
That's fine. Tell your agency we use the AdTech Helios system.

What are "rich media" ads and can you carry them?
Rich media ads enable you to use more sophisticated formats for your creative - for example, Macromedia Flash or DHTML - which can provide extremely high impact advertising. We accept rich media over-the-page floating ads, but not pop-ups or pop-unders.

What's the cheapest way to place an ad?

  • A run-of-site ad is cheapest
  • An ad on the home page is the most expensive
  • Any other specified position costs somewhere between the two

The CPM rate falls as the volume increases. The more you buy, the cheaper the CPM. For information on rates, please see our ratecard.

Can you measure the response my ad gets for me?
Absolutely. We can give you access to an online reporting system from which you can run your own reports. Reports will tell you how many times your ad has been viewed and how many times it has been clicked on.

How can I maximise response to my ad?
If you provide us with more than one creative, our ad-serving software will analyse which ad is performing best (based on its click-through rate) and will deliver the ads in such a way as to favour the most successful one.

What is frequency capping?
Frequency capping is a method of restricting the number of times a user views your ad. We do not offer frequency-capping on banner, skyscraper or button ads.

Where else can I place ads?
Other options include sponsorship of PersonnelToday.com DIRECT, our fortnightly email newsletter
