NEWS SYNDICATION SERVICES FROM PERSONNELTODAY.COM

(30 July 2008 11:35)

Personneltoday.com news feeds are available XML (RSS) and JavaScript. As RSS is so widely supported, we recommend that you use this option.

XML(RSS) Feed

Our RSS feeds are available in RSS 2.0 format. See  http://www.personneltoday.com/StaticPages/rss.htm for a full list of available RSS 2.0 feeds

We cannot advise you on processing these files, but there are many examples on the web to which you can refer.

JavaScript Feed

If you do not want to worry about server-side programming, use the JavaScript feed. To use this simply copy and paste the following code into your web page, at the point you would like the news feed to appear. (Hint: click in the text area below, press Ctrl-A (select all), Ctrl-C (copy). Now find the place you would like to paste the code in your web page, and press Ctrl-V (paste)).

!! Please note that some web browsers do have a tendency to cache JavaScript which can result in some users having difficulty viewing the latest news.

Customisation of the JavaScript Feed

You can configure the way the news is presented on your web page. There are three options you can set. You can:

1. Choose how many news stories you want to list.

You can choose any number between 3 and 10. The default number is 5.

To show six news stories set "noOfStories" to 6. E.g.:

   noOfStories = 6;

2. Show the first sentence of each news story or not show it.

You can choose just to show the headlines on your site, or to have headlines AND the first sentence of the story.

We have set the default to "true" but you can change it to "false" if you like. Please note that the "true" and "false" options are case sensitive, and must be typed in lower case.

To show the news story descriptions set "showDescription" to "true". E.g.:

   showDescription = true;

3. Show the date the news was published.

Do you want to show the date the news was published? You almost certainly will, as this shows that the news on your website is up to date.

The default value is true. Note that this value is case sensitive, and must be typed in lower case.

To show the publication date, set "showPublishDate" to "true". E.g.:

   showPublishDate = true;

Finally, you can use style sheets to controll the colours and the layout of the news. Have a look at the <style>...</style> section in the code above.
