Quotas are the only way to get more women on boards

It’s fashionable in the City to decry the idea of formal quotas for women on executive boards. “Patronising”, “tokenism” and “political correctness gone mad” are the usual responses when the idea is raised. Let the market decide, comes the cry.  But, while the Davies Review today talks of the successes in getting more women into boardroom posts, scratch beneath the surface of non-executive positions and you quickly see that where the power really lies — in the executive and chairman roles — the market is clearly deciding to stay male and pale.
