There was a small but important word missing from your report last week of the comments I made at the Personnel Today HR Directors Club event (‘Orme vows to work with government to raise profile of HR’,Personnel Today, 7 October).
I set out the challenge we face in cementing our profession as an excellent business discipline. I contrasted this with being seen as just a people discipline.
The word ‘just’ got lost in your report.
For us to cement once and for all our position as a truly excellent business discipline, it will be imperative that we bring all we know and understand about people to the table.
Where we still have work to do is demonstrating how much we know and understand about the business, too.
Our role as a function is evolving and changing for the better.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development is launching new research to paint a picture of what this changing HR profession will look like in five or 10 years’ time.
But we’re 100% clear that we’ll still be a people discipline in this future. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water.
