More than 1,250 guests packed into the Grosvenor House in Park Lane last Thursday for the most prestigious event in the HR calendar: the Personnel Today Awards 2006.

HR professionals donned black and white masks as part of the Venetian Masked Ball theme, while outrageous comedian Julian Clary kept everyone entertained. There was even a mesmerising appearance from the Phantom of the Opera.

The winners

Overall Winner:
Royal Mail
Mike Hitchins, Dermot Toberty and team, Royal Mail

“This is the culmination of three-and-a-half years of hard graft. Change doesn’t come easy but we’ve achieved what we set out to do. The methods and processes we put in place are sustainable, so the team aren’t affected if there are any staff changes. Our employees remain motivated as a result.”

Dermot Toberty

Addleshaw Goddard HR Impact Award:
The AA’s senior HR team

“It’s amazing. What we did was huge in terms of business impact. It changed the value of the organisation. Now we want to look at our recovery business and engineer huge business benefits.”

Sarah Stacey

BlessingWhite Award for Talent Management:
The Talent Management and Succession Planning team, Network Rail

Capgemini Employer Branding Award:
The Recruitment Services team, Barclays Bank

“The highlight of my evening – apart from kissing Julian Clary – was winning the Employer Branding Award. We recognise these awards as the best in the industry and it not only gains us industry recognition, but shows we are on top of our game.

Kathryn Cleverley

Ceridian HR Director of the Year:
Wendy Dean, ANC Express

“I’m stunned. I think it was essentially about putting our people at the heart of our company strategy and this shows that we’ve done something right.”

Wendy Dean

Fujitsu Services and Baxter Neumann Award for Excellence in Outsourcing & Shared Services:
