A
pensioner has blocked the creation of the UK’s largest private sector union
after lodging an appeal at the 11th hour.
The
merger between Amicus and banking union Unifi was announced on Tuesday, but The
Times reports that the certification officer – who makes sure unions stay on
the right side of the law – has been unable to sign off the deal.
The
man – a Unifi member – complained to the certification officer about the way
members were balloted on the merger and the nature of information distributed
to members. His intervention means the formation of the so-called ‘super-union’
could be delayed for up to six months.

A
Unifi spokesman said the two unions would work together as planned, and the
delay was just a "technical hitch".
