A free guide to help employers work through the process of engaging an occupational health (OH) physician has been published by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.
The guide covers issues such as when and why employers would need an OH physician, what they actually do and can offer to employers, and how to choose a provider, including the pros and cons of tendering for a physician’s service versus hiring them outright.

It also addresses key questions for employers, such as how to monitor delivery and ensure they are getting value for money, and understanding the limitations of what an OH physician can do, yet also how they can help organisations when it comes to managing or mitigating risk.
“Occupational physicians are able to help an employer significantly reduce the risks and thus assist with optimising productivity while reducing costs related to health,” it argued.
