Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has made great strides in improving the occupational health of workers in its construction supply chain, according to a report by the industry OH body Constructing Better Health.
A year-long occupational health programme at 50 sites in the UK found that more than two-thirds of safety-critical workers were identified as being fully fit to carry out their tasks without any restrictions.

More than 1,000 employees had taken part in the programme, which examined work-related issues such as hand-arm vibration syndrome, noise-induced hearing loss and musculoskeletal disorders such as lower back pain or repetitive strain injuries.
For those that did have additional needs, Sainsbury’s had been quick to provide the appropriate support, with the help of guidance from Constructing Better Health and its accredited occupational health providers, it added.
