At the conference, Atwell was awarded the Fellowship of the RCN for being “a true pioneer for nursing and an inspirational leader in occupational health nursing nationally and internationally”.
She is only the second nurse to have been made an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Health Medicine, and the only practising nurse to be elected as a commissioner onto the Health and Safety Commission. Also speaking at the conference was health secretary Alan Johnson, who admitted the government needed to do more to improve access to post-registration training and development for nurses.
