Insurer and healthcare provider Norwich Union has urged manufacturers to be aware of the dangers of working with machinery, as part of a new campaign called Simply Safety.
With the sector recording some 27,000 work-related injuries last year, there was still a long way to go towards reducing accidents and improving health and safety, said Phil Grace, liability risk manager for Norwich Union.
Machinery in the workplace is governed by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, which require it should be suitable for its purpose, properly maintained and safe to clean and use.
Grace pointed out the importance of having equipment that is properly installed, with users given the correct training and information.

“Taking simple precautions, such as switching off all machinery before cleaning takes place, can also reduce accidents. Too often short cuts are made to save time, which can be dangerous,” he said.
