More than a million drivers could be breaking the law by using their cars for work and not insuring them correctly, according to a survey.
Almost a third of the 430 owner-managers questioned by online insurer motorinsurance.com admitted to either not having, or not knowing whether they have, appropriate insurance cover when using their vehicles on business.
Managing director of motorinsurance.co.uk, Mark Bower-Dyke, said: “If people are using their cars for a business trip, they must be insured under a Class 1 use – a business – use policy.”

If drivers only have a domestic and social use, the insurance companies do not have to pay up in the event of an accident, he said.
The survey also found 26% of the respondents drive more than 500 miles per week.
