New guidance on preventing back pain and manual handling injuries in the catering and hospitality industry has been published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Such injuries are among the most common in the industry and, across the workforce as a whole, back pain and upper limb disorders accounted for around three-quarters of the two million people who suffered occupational ill health in 2004-05, said HSE.
The guidance offers practical information on good manual handling techniques and lifting aids, along with information on significant risk areas such as washing dishes, food preparation, storage and cleaning.
