Conference on best practice in manufacturing


A conference highlighting best practice in rehabilitation and managing sickness absence in manufacturing is being run by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) this month. It will take place on 9 March in Stoke-on-Trent. Enquiries to [email protected]

HSE launches ‘Watch your Step’ campaign

The HSE began a nationwide inspection programme in February targeting building sites with poor health and safety records. The ‘Watch Your Step’ campaign will visit 1,000 sites in a bid to reduce the more than 3,000 slip or trip incidents reported by the industry each year.

Asbestos exposure risk leads to £50,000 fine

An egg carton manufacturer Omni-Pac, based in Great Yarmouth, has been fined £50,000 and ordered to pay costs of £86,000 after failing to maintain materials containing asbestos on its site, leading to a risk of people being exposed to the substance.

Proprietor jailed over construction death

Wayne Davies, the proprietor of construction firm A&E Buildings, has been jailed for 18 months following an accident in 2004 in which one employee died and another was seriously injured. The two workers fell from height while constructing a steel-framed barn.
