As part of our 20th anniversary celebration we want you to share your experience of your HR career. What were you doing in 1988? Did you have a "micro-computer"? Apparently only a third of HR processes were done electronically and this was mainly payroll.

What was your department called? How have things changed?

Back in February 1988, on the night of a full moon, Yours Truly was involved in a freak midnight gardening accident, involving a cocktail of dangerous chemicals, a rake and 14 packets of unbranded cornflakes.
And in traditional superhero/superbaddy fashion, this lunar incident resulted in a total body transmogrification.
After this catharsis, it took Guru a while to come to terms with his new-found celebrity blueness... and baldness... but gradually his new calling emerged on the horizon.
It's difficult to say whether knowing how a selection of chemicals was likely to react would have led to Yours Truly avoiding the garden that night.
But the HR community is a bluer place as a result.
Your humble servant,
Guru

Ahh, what a year 1988 was. First year at secondary school, sussing out who was cool, who were the squares. I was one of the cool ones of course...

May saw the greatest upset in FA Cup Final history when Wimbledon beat Liverpool 1-0 at Wembley. I was there, one of the few Dons supporters amongst a heaving mass of Scousers.

Can't believe that was 20 years ago. The Crazy Gang winning the Cup and Personnel Today being published for the first time - can it get any better than that?

I must have gained my HR experience in a very advanced era ,as my first generalist role was with a very progressive company called Anglo American Corporation-their gold mining division in particular where 100% of the HR info system was computerised within a mainframe using software called H.U.R.I.S.

I started there in 1985 and this system had been up and running quite a few years before I came onto the HR scene .The labour law was also advanced at that time to what the legislation is presently in the UK.There an employee could access most of the remedies available to them whilst IN  employment. They did not first have to lose their jobs. This was provided for by a clause called the "Unfair Labout Practice" clause.Management had to re-think their strategy in dealing with ER/IR related situations. It made better managers in the end.Maybe sometime in the future we here in the UK could catch up with what is "old hat" in more progressive countries presently.
