There are a number of templates around, but you need to m ake sure that you selection matrix reflects the organisation and the job roles are are being carried out.  I would recommend that you have some techinal (Job Specific) competencies/skills that are relevant to the positions that you are scoring and also then add some general soft skills e.g. communication, attendance, timekeeping.

 Hope this helps.

Hi - If possible could you send me a copy of your template. I was recently made redundant without any assessment being made and now two weeks after my departure, the employer has come up with his criteria and weighting figures. The item with the highest rating is 'futue work load' which in my view is not relevent in asssessing the skills / experience / employment record of an employee. many thanks

Selecting people for redundancy, is no different to selecting people for recruitment, promotion, transfer etc. The process is the same for all. Criteria used should always be objective and measurable in comparison to other candidates. Using a matrix is a good idea as long as the criteria used is relevant and applied to all concerned..

Hello,

The criteria used should be objective, relevant to the job in question and capable of being applied fairly to all concerned without bias.

If a job requires you to have two legs and you are deficient to the tune of one leg, then this is an objective criteria upon which your ability to perform in that job could be reasonably assessed in comparason to someone who had, say, two legs.

If you are follicly challenged, and this has no bearing on your ability to perform the work that you are expected to do, assessment on this criteria could be said to be subjective.

Frank puts it very well, the criteria should be such that there is no discrimination in its application.

Regards,

Recycled.

Create a spreadsheet with the employee names [from the selection pool] down the left-hand column and the desired qualities/attributes across the top.  Add points out of and then score each individual accordingly.  Add each persons points up and the lowest are likely to be selected for redundancy. The max score for each quality can be weighted according to how important it is, e.g. 90% could be out of 100, IT skills could be out of 70 etc.  This way the most important qualities can gain higher points.
