Staff consultation the key to a safe workplace says HSC

The
Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has today called on employers to involve and
consult with staff to improve standards in the workplace.

Greater
collaboration between employers and employees is a cornerstone of the new HSC
health and safety strategy, which identifies workers as crucial to improving
standards.

Chair
of the HSC Bill Callaghan said a greater emphasis on partnership would help
manage risks and improve occupational health.

The
HSC has launched a statement outlining the principles of worker involvement,
examples of how to secure it, and evidence supporting its effectiveness.

Callaghan
said the move was not about new regulation, but hoped it would inspire more
employers to consult with staff on safety matters.
