CIPD Harrogate – Don’t forget the self-employed

Personnel professionals will increasingly need to manage people working outside their organisations, CIPD director general Geoff Armstrong said in his closing remarks to delegates today.

"We are talking about the field of the development and the management of people whatever their relationship with the organisation," he said on the last day of the annual CIPD conference in Harrogate.

Armstrong said that in an era when many people were self-employed in a freelance capacity, HR practitioners should include them in their strategies.

"We only succeed in so far as we create the space for all our colleagues to make themselves available to the organisation.

He said that personnel in the 21^st century had little to do with "forms and arithmetic". Rather, "it was a question of humanity," he said.
