Usdaw plans to name and shame retail ‘Scrooges’

Shop
workers union Usdaw is urging its members to report retailers that open on
Christmas Day, as part of its campaign for legislation banning large shops from
trading on December 25.

The
union is planning to ‘name and shame’ companies that open on Christmas Day,
depriving staff of holiday.

General
secretary Bill Connor said businesses that open over Christmas put too much
pressure on employees at a time when they should be with their families.

"This
is the 21st century, not the 19th century of Dickens and Scrooge. If people
can’t relax with their families on Christmas Day, when can they?" he said.
