The Football Association should take a scientific approach to selecting the next manager of the England football team by analysing leadership skills in the same way as top companies, Hay Management Consultants has advised.
Iain Fitzpatrick, consultant at Hay Management Consultants and a former professional footballer, explained, ‘New research shows that most of the difference between outstanding leaders and the average comes down to what is now being called emotional intelligence – our capacity for recognising and managing out own and other’s emotions.’
He believes Kevin Keegan and Glen Hoddle both lacked emotional intelligence. To assess levels of emotional intelligence and leadership styles, Fitzpatrick suggests the use of ‘360 degree analyses’ involving structured interviews not only with potential managers but with the players they have managed and their former clubs’ management.
