P&O workers threaten strike action over pay and conditions

P&O ferry workers are threatening to strike, claiming that new pay and conditions could make them £3,000 a year worse off.

The RMT union said it was worried about the pensions of 350 workers being transferred to Brittany Ferries and an extra hour on their 11-hour day. Extra bank holiday payments will also be axed and sick pay will only start after eight days.

RMT national organiser Steve Todd, due to meet P&O today, said staff in Hull would be worse hit. “We expected some changes but we didn’t imagine the cuts to terms and conditions could be so savage,” he told the Daily Mirror.

P&O, which last month announced plans to cut 1,200 jobs, said: “What we have proposed reflects the situation of the ferries business.”
