Public sector unrest as pensions talks stall

Public sector union Unison is
warning that industrial action is now a "real possibility" after
talks with the Government over changes to the local
government pension scheme reached a stalemate.

The union’s general secretary,
Dave Prentis, has attacked plans
to force through increases in the retirement age for thousands of local council
and education staff and cut retirement benefits.

He said: "My members in
local government are extremely angry and industrial action is now a real
possibility, we are getting nowhere in our talks with the Government.

"I will be raising our
objections with ministers at the Labour Party conference next week. This is a
fight our members can’t afford to give up on when the average pension for a
local government worker is just £3,800 a year."
