Teachers union opposes government pay plans

The
National Union of Teachers will oppose government plans to give schools more
freedom over teachers’ pay and conditions, its new general head said yesterday.

Steve
Sinnott, who became NUT general secretary last week, backed increased
investment, but said national pay deals should not be ignored.

Under
a five-year plan for secondary schools, to be unveiled on Thursday, new ‘city
academies’ and other top-performing schools are expected to win greater freedom
to borrow money and set pay conditions.

However,
speaking to Sky News, Sinnott said: “We’re in favour of ploughing in resources.
But we don’t want it at the expense of other schools.”
