Unions
have vowed to fight the proposed closure of British Airways’ Glasgow call
centre after the company told staff that it wanted to close down the site as
part of further restructuring within the firm.
The
GMB, the UK’s general union, claims more than 360 jobs are threatened by
closure and if the site closed it would eliminate most of the remaining BA
workforce in Scotland.
Allan
Black, the GMB national official for the aviation industry, said: "This
news is a devastating blow to BA workers in Glasgow.
"However,
the GMB believes that there is a sound business case for BA to keep a call
centre in Glasgow although perhaps not on the current site.
"The
majority of the workforce in Glasgow live in an area of high employment and not
only is this devastating news for them it is also a blow for the local economy.

"We
will be asking BA to bring ‘in house’ work that is currently being done both in
the UK and abroad to ensure that our members jobs are safeguarded," he
said.
